Jefferson’s Halloween trifecta is slated for Thursday, Oct. 29.
The fun begins with a come-and-go Halloween party at the Greene County Community Center. Registration begins at 3:45 pm (pre-registrations are encouraged) and the party will be from 4 to 5 pm. All children ages 2 through fifth grade are invited. There is no charge.
Trick-or-Treat Around the Square, hosted by the Greene County Chamber, will be from 5 to 7 pm. Downtown merchants and others will have plenty of treats for all and stores will be open for shopping.
The Chamber is putting the “trick” back in “trick-or-treat) with a Tricky Trick contest in the courthouse rotunda. Registration will begin at 6:30 and the contest will start at 6:45. Everyone who has a special “trick,” like reciting the alphabet backwards or wrapping her leg behind her neck, is welcome. According to Angie Pedersen, originator of the contest, the only rule is that tricks must not endanger the well-being of the participants or the courthouse (for example, there will be no skateboard tricks or fire-breathing.)
Tricks will be judged on originality, preparedness, showmanship and skill. Prizes will be awarded in two categories: ages 12 and younger, and ages 13 and older. Prizes are sponsored by Addie’s, Uncorked Wine & Spirits, and GreeneCountyNewsOnline.
As in previous years, the staff at the Jefferson public library and local volunteers will pull out all the stops to put on a memorable book-based party from 5 to 7 pm. This year, the book “Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Book? by Lauren Child will be brought to life in a 10-minute skit in the library basement.
The story is about a young boy named Herb who loves to read, but he is a bit naughty. He reads with sticky fingers and tears the pages and draws mustaches on the characters in his books. This changes the outcome of the fairy tales in his book. “The Library Fairy Tale Crew will present a skit about what happened to Herb one strange night. Come and find out if the story ends happily ever after!” says children’s librarian Terry Clark.
Beggar’s Night in Jefferson is Saturday, Oct. 31, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.
